You came in seeking to destroy and ravage a city
You took so many lives and homes what a pity
Families separated, bused here and there
Some never to find each other any where

You took what they built their whole lives
In an instant was gone, left only with knives
And hammers and anything to cut the the roofs
Leaving behind every thing they knew

Some leaving with the clothes on their back
Some came bringing only a small sack
Some had to wade through waters so dirty and deep
And stay on a broken highway or some other street

The ones that had nothing, they had to loot
Some for days without any water or food
The city told some to stay in a dome
That was total hell and they were left to roam

The water kept rising in their too
It was filth and choas and like a zoo
Some stayed behind and tried to live
Some couldn't afford to leave, had nothing to give

Some stayed because they couldn't leave their pet
And those forced out haven't found them yet
Everyone is scratching their head on who to blame
Who knows who dropped the ball, what a shame?

Some left who died, just put a sheet over their head
Some in nursing homes, left to die in their bed
Oh what devastation you left behind
You will always be kept in our mind

Donna Nimmo

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/hurricane-katrina/
