Yes, it's Christmas once again:
Commercial dance nearly done
only morning-after sales left,
unless of course you're Orthodox
then you're still caught in the insanity.

Used to be, there was meaning;
something more to this day
something that connected us
to our own sense of divinity:
The beginning of a story
whose power changed a world...

Now under gray skies and
w/ Christmas jingles on radio
and pumped muzak into every shop
Perhaps its time to slow down, to stop
& consider that old story.

'The power of scripture is in the story, '
so I wrote one day.
& the power of this story
still hasn't gone away.
Just buried beneath
the weight of cheesy Christmas cards,
tinsel, dried fruitcake
& too much discarded gift wrap
nearly obscuring its meaning
which longs only
to be heard in the simple
silence of the human heart.

(Copyright 12/25/2005)

Hugh Cobb

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-christmas-thought/
