In the stillness of the night,
A storm did blow in.
It knocked out all the lights
And lashed upon the windows.
Then I heard a noise..
One I did not want to hear.
It was the sound of footsteps
Right outside my door.
Alone in my bedroom
I could see the beam of a flashlight
From the crack under the door.
The sound of a rattling doorknob
Pierced through the night.
It sounded far away
But I could tell it was close.
The door opened.
There he was,
Standing in my doorway,
Knife in his hand.
I screamed till my throat hurt
As he came towards my bed.
The last I remember
Was a flash of lightning
Showing scars on his face.
Then there was black all around me.
Now I lie in my grave,
Still alone and afraid.
Just because of
The man in the night.
I know he’s still out there.
Waiting silently.
secluded in the shadows.
Waiting for the press
To go away.
Then he’ll emerge
And choose his next victim.
Watching them,
Studying them,
Making sure
They won’t be expecting him.
Then on a dark night
He’ll come for them.
Creeping silently,
Oh so quietly.
He’ll slip into their bedroom
And whisper his tune of death
As he kills them
Just like he did to me.
So a fair warning to all;
Stay out of sight.
Don’t go outside.
Lock all the doors.
Close all the windows.
Because you never know
Who might be next.
It could even be
YOU!

Ashleigh Stephenson

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-man-in-the-night/
