walking along.
meandering, really.
head full of deep thoughts, barely
looking at
the hallway in front of me.
pondering whether or not humans have instincts.
I’m leaning towards no.

and then it hits me:
BAM!
a sudden realization.
an awesome, intense, physical revelation.
and everything:
the sun, the world, you,
the entire universe is revolving around me.

and nothing else matters in this little
parenthesis
of my existence-
orphans don’t matter
the poor, the hungry don’t matter
the oppressed peoples of
wherever
don’t matter
only this, my brain,
my exquisite cranium, matters.

it hit me like the sun
hits hungover retinas accustomed
to sunglasses, that are quickly removed.
it hit me blindingly, eyes clenched closed.

I just hope those people over there
didn’t see it hit me,
because I always laugh when I see
some poor fool
walk into a sliding glass door.

Jackson Riley

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/it-hit-me-about-5min-ago/
