There is nothing but shadows <br />On this desolate afternoon; <br />The light of hope <br />And the flame of compassion <br />Are no longer seen, <br />Snuffed out like a candle’s wick <br />Or a child’s dream. <br />I don’t know <br />What anything means, <br />This groping along ledges <br />And fearing the ravine, <br />The knowledge <br />Of pain and pointlessness. <br /> <br />I’m not wrapped in love <br />I’m hidden in plain sight <br />Making my way <br />Along cruel, unforgiving streets <br />Where the girls all wear <br />Dark soul-concealing clothes <br />And have broken heart tattoos, <br />Where mistreatment is expected, <br />Where unprincipled pimps <br />Take a girl’s rent <br />And slap her in the deal. <br />Everyone has lost <br />The power to feel. <br /> <br />Abstract platitudes <br />And sublimely-painted poetry <br />At this moment only annoy me, <br />I have no confidence <br />That anything will ever be right <br />Or return to me a cosmic night <br />Of jubilant celebration. <br />Everything just spirals downward <br />Where satanic forces wait with glee <br />To carve away at your humanity <br />With razor-sharp knives of depression <br />Until your real self is eliminated.<br /><br />Uriah Hamilton<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/satanic-forces-wait-with-glee/
