Poetry is like the blood that flows through my veins!
It empowers me to be whatever I want.
I in one verse I can write about the mystics of love
Then in another about the chaos of war!
When a pen enters my hand I simultaneously start thinking
And writing at the same time.
Not knowing exactly what I am writing about, but
all I know is that a storm of words is being processed
From my mind to my pen in a matter of seconds.
When im done I feel empty, as if I have been drained of my soul,
I then have to let my mind regains its composure.
I think to my self “Am I really a poet? ”
Maya Angelou was a poet, Langston Huges was a poet,
But ME Odochi Ibe a poet, that cant be!
How can I be a poet when I have never published anything?
I have never shock the world with a single verse
Or changed a life with a single prose,
How can I be a Poet!
Then I smile to myself and say
Who was Nikki Giovanni but a girl with something to say?
Did she know that she would be known as one of
the great poets of our time?
Did she think to her self “The moment I write this poem people will name
me the greatest”
No!
All she had was pen and paper and the fire of words
Pulsating through her veins.
So I ask you am I a poet?

Ode Ibe

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/what-makes-a-poet/
