Twenty-five years in the penitentiary, <br />Between those granite halls of shame, <br />Where today is tomorrow <br />And tomorrow today <br />And yesterday the same. <br /> <br />Twenty-five years in the drudge <br />Of looking up at a highway of barbed wires <br />Where the sky was never blue, <br />Always stained by the brown <br />From the gas-refinery fires, <br />Roasting the stew. <br /> <br />Twenty-five years in the hole, <br />Dug deeper than the garden of black roses, <br />Where the skulls laid in scallops <br />Under the boneyard <br />Where Diablo poses. <br /> <br />Twenty-five years since I last saw you, <br />Gorgeous satin night sky. <br />Now you've organized a band of stars <br />In the full moon amphitheatre <br />With this symphony passing me by. <br />Twenty-five years 'til now <br />Since I gave myself a good cry.<br /><br />K.
