I saw a little bird today
Standing on the snow
Whose movements were not normal
Being very slow

And while I watched my feathered friend
I instinctively knew
That this was it's last day on earth
Another it would not know

I watched it for an hour
In it's feeble attempts to eat
It's weak wings fluttering
The unsteadiness of it's feet

The brightness gone from it's eyes
The holding of it's head
Left no doubt in my mind
The bird would soon be dead

I looked out another window
And saw it's mate nearby
From it's motley appearance
I knew it too would die

They did not come together
As dying people would
But, apart from each other
On their own they stood

A lesson for humanity
Is what I think I saw
Do not be afraid of death
Don't fear to die atall

For God will walk there with you
Or send someone in His Stead
To help you cross the chasm
From life to being dead

Walter Lane

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/end-of-life/
