I look down your gun <br />With this longing-dog stare, <br />Splayed out before you <br />And as the war wreaking near <br />Just seems like swaying red curtains <br />During a wheatfield gale, <br />You question me. <br /> <br />I have a home, <br />I am a father <br />And I carry my children in my heart. <br />I carry their hearts all interlocked, <br />It keeps my soul from tearing apart. <br /> <br />I am loved, <br />Much more so than yesterday, <br />It breathes across the ocean <br />And through the fires of this fray, <br />It cuts through the starless darkness <br />And it helps me find my way. <br /> <br />Just remember this <br />Before you end all I am <br />And all I ever will be <br />Because I know you are loved too <br />And you carry your children's hearts also. <br /> <br />I have no hatred for you, <br />It is okay, <br />And I understand <br />So take this stride, <br />And, friend, <br />I will shake your hand <br />When you meet me on the other side.<br /><br />K.
