If we were all like fence posts… <br />We would be uniform and plain. <br />Standing in alignment and keeping others out. <br />We would hinder sight for all who pass. <br />Making those who trespass wonder just what we hide. <br />Perhaps we would have a fresh coat of paint. <br />Or, even a shiny new hinge for our gate. <br />Perhaps we would be made of iron, <br />And bleed those who would climb our posts. <br />Maybe your gate is made of electricity <br />Burning and shocking anyone who touches…. <br />Mine is worn and weathered. <br />Standing crooked with chipped paint and splintered in spots. <br />My gate is hanging by one hinge and squeaks when you open it. <br />Just standing high enough to keep the animals out of my garden, <br />But, not high enough to discourage an onlooker from beauty. <br />If we were all like fence posts…. <br />Mine would be worn and weathered. <br /> <br />Copyright 2006 A.J.
