Out the window in the dark <br />A rustling sound, a dog's bark, <br />Then silence as you wait. <br />Creaking hinges of the gate? <br /> <br />Maybe just the branches <br />Moving in the wind; scratches <br />Against the wall <br />As wet leaves begin to fall. <br /> <br />Could it have been the gate? <br />But still you hesitate, <br />To look outside, <br />Maybe whatever is, is now inside. <br /> <br />The silence is overwhelming <br />It's like it was in the beginning <br />No movement stirs the air <br />Yet, what is it, over there? <br /> <br />The sound of breathing, soft and low <br />Perhaps only the curtains as they billow. <br />Moving in the breath of air <br />As though someone's passing there. <br /> <br />A shadow so long and tall <br />Maybe, nothing; nothing at all. <br />Just your imagination on a lark! <br />There can be no shadow's in the dark! <br /> <br />Then a sound for which you're certain <br />More than just a rustle of the curtain, <br />In the other room, padding of feet <br />As though making a hasty retreat. <br /> <br />Suddenly a light so bright <br />Dispels the darkness of the night. <br />It's the call of nature <br />One so pure. <br /> <br />Tinkling in the reservoir.<br /><br />Sidi J.
