The promise of things to come
Resides in the tight protective case
That has protected the inner works
From assault by the outside world.

Kept away from a peaceful bed,
Starved of light and nourishment
Sleeping a restless sleep
While others have long gone.

Too much time spent
All alone.
Intended for a new arising
But somehow forgotten
And made to slumber on.

Now as if by chance the master calls:
Take up your rightly place in the bed
And awake from your slumbers and reveal
The magic that has been concealed.

Move restlessly as your skin grows taunt
And as inner workings awake
The spirit moves within the tiny bud
Which takes on a life of its own.

It swells and darkens with life giving fluids
Until it stands erect,
But still contained within the body
Until the warmth of the moment causes excitement
And it burst forth
A monument to life.

Now emerging from the folds
It stands bent by the efforts of the past exertion
until as before,
Responds to light
And shows a new life.

Unfolding, the neck straightens
Until the head
Is revealed in all its majesty
And prepared to accept the warm embrace.
Moisture glistens within the crevice
As the wings unfold

And life anew is born,
The snowpea has sprouted.

Sidi J.
