Don’t put us down, until you understand, where <br />we are coming from without a helping hand. <br />We’re all alone, my husband walked away. <br />He left us to fend for ourselves each and every day. <br /> <br />You look at my children and me without sympathy. <br />Walk a mile in our shoes and then you’ll see. <br />Life is not what we expected it to be. <br />We will do our best to reach prosperity. <br /> <br />You call us welfare bums laugh at our tattered clothes. <br />The hurt felt inside, only God knows. <br />Soon to become equals among the human race, <br />tools needed to prosper, has finally taken its place. <br /> <br />We now walk on our own, holding our heads high. <br />No helping hand needed in order to get by. <br />God walked beside us through heartache and pain. <br />Giving gifts of opportunity, our lives to gain. <br /> <br />We will never forget those hard and trying days. <br />Welfare provided by the Lord in so many ways. <br />Now life has changed its course, we are in the <br />drivers seat, we’ll never turn our backs on <br />anyone we meet.<br /><br />Melvina Germain<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/970-welfare-bums/
