A beggar stands with cup in hand
His eyes upon the street
Scattered shards of love and hope
Arrayed before his feet

An angry man with writer’s hands
And codes of social worth
Stops to ventilate the thesis
Written on his shirt

“You think you are to blame for this
But no it’s not like that
There are global forces here at work
That you don’t understand”

“They hold the media in their hands
And spin and mold the truth
And politicians good or bad
Must face the polling booth”

“As soulless multinationals
With the ethics of a thief
Crawl lower than a snail’s slime
And take whatever they can reach”

“In their relentless single minded drive
To chase the bottom line
They’ll suck the life from you and me
And throw the husks aside”

And he spat the words with outraged voice
“This is where the REVOLUTION starts”.
“Ha where’ve you been my dreamer friend
the revolution never stopped.”

“I was once like you so full of fire
And sure that I was right
But now I’d rather dance n sing
Than take up arms n fight”

He pulled his coat about himself
And gathered to depart
“Plus ca change plus c’est la meme”
He bowed and touched his heart

Were living in a land of wealth
Of opportunity
A land that helps the helpless
With gifts and charity

Where cries of outrage cries of pain
Are few and far between
And trains and buses run on time
And no one bothers me

N I’ll grab a beer n watch tv
I don’t look up too high
I wander round with my head bowed down
And dream about the sky

David S Dennis

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/82-incident-at-hyde-park-corner/
