'Where did I come from? ' the child asked,
'Heaven, ' was the mother's answer;
'Did Father and you come from heaven, too? '
'Yes, my little one, we all came from there.'
'Is life in heaven, Mother, a good life? '
'Angellic life: no sickness, thirst, hunger,
without grief and toil, without nighjt and day,
and you can have all your heart's desire.'

The puzzled child's next question was this:
'If you and I, and Father as well,
are of heaven, and life there is full of bliss,
then why are we here suffering in Hell? '
To that, the poor mother's only reply
was a helpless look and a long-drawn sigh.

Jann Matthew Papin

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/people-from-heaven/
