Every few months, a shot rings out <br />in the desert of the public mind; <br />another cliché (reading its local newssheet, <br />chewed cigar in mouth, string tie, <br />six-gun handy, sheriff’s badge <br />worn shamelessly..) .. thup.. <br />bites the studio dust… <br /> <br />Last year ‘bout this time, <br />we buried WMD.. or <br />‘wepmastruc’ in Bushspeak… <br />seems it had lived quite long enough, <br />demented in the Sunset Home… <br /> <br />This week, we’re invited to the wake <br />after the private burial of <br />War On Terror; RIP (for some) : <br /> <br />Seems it’s made life too heroic <br />for this captive audience: <br />a pre-Christian world, <br />neatly divided into forces of evil, <br />forces of good: you’n-me’n-Johnny Wayne’n- <br />the Mayor of Carmel ’gainst <br />the bad guys.. but… <br />some guy up in the projection room <br />lost the last reel… now we’ll never know <br />about that happy ending (fade in music) .. <br /> <br />seems the old guy saw life just too black and white <br />(I’m talking metaphorically, OK?) <br />and life just ain’t that simple any more… pardner.. <br />the old West is dead…so ride off into the sunset, <br />ole ‘War on Terror’…as the credits roll - <br />the bad guy now lives down the street from you; <br />a quiet family, always greet you as they pass.. <br /> <br />but don’t worry, ours is a lively language <br />here in Spinville; we’ll think of something else, <br />like, say, ‘Neighbour Threat’… <br />just fill in this form, would you, <br />and don’t forget the <br />‘Confidential Neighbour Information’ page?<br /><br />Michael Shepherd<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/another-clich-er-bites-the-dust/
