A certain slant of light <br />(in the evening) <br />said to me softly: <br /> <br />” A stranger was here <br />...looking for you.” <br /> <br />“She spoke your name <br />as one who had loved you.” <br /> <br />I thanked the light <br />and hurried on until I came upon <br /> <br />a certain kind of birdsong <br />(I was unfamiliar with) . <br /> <br />Delightedly it told me: <br /> <br />“ A stranger was here <br />...asking of you.” <br /> <br />She spoke your name <br />as one who had loved you.” <br /> <br />Thanking the twittering <br />I hurried along. <br /> <br />A sunrise and a sunset <br />also spoke of this stranger <br /> <br />who spoke with goodness <br />in her heart <br />and always asked for me, <br /> <br />Many times our paths <br />crossed... <br />...or we just missed each <br />other. <br /> <br />“ A stranger...just gone... <br />your name...full of love.” <br /> <br />Finally I found the stranger <br />or the stranger found me. <br /> <br />(What does it matter) ? <br /> <br />The stranger was no stranger. <br /> <br />She greeted me with a kiss. <br /> <br />I kissed her kiss <br />and embraced her embrace. <br /> <br />“Is it time yet? ” <br />I asked her. <br /> <br />“Not yet...” <br />she smiled and whispered <br />“...not yet.” <br /> <br />“So, to what do I owe <br />this visit.” <br /> <br /> <br />“I just wanted to see <br />if you...remembered me? ” <br /> <br />I grinned: “How could I forget...” <br /> <br />We kissed goodbye. <br /> <br />I waved. <br /> <br />She waved. <br /> <br />I said goodbye to <br /> <br />my Death.<br /><br />Dónall Dempsey<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/hi-there-stranger/
