The whirr of the propellers <br />the crack crack of the machine guns <br />the whoosh of the bullets <br />spitting, spit spit spit <br />thousands of them <br />like pulled teeth from a dinosaur’s gums <br />here they come <br />raining back at us <br />I yell at my pal <br />watch out! <br />don’t let those bounders get you! <br />he turns his helmeted head <br />straps hanging <br />goggle-eyed <br />and shouts <br />‘whacko Leonard! <br />we’ll trounce the blighters! ’ <br />the plane dips and plays with the slipstream <br />from a Messerschmit fart <br />then from nowhere <br />a hellish dart smashes his window <br />his head is blood red <br />I cannot hold the red-splashed, slippery wheel <br />and the salty waves come up to greet us …. <br />goodbye my friend <br />is this the end? <br />or yet another beginning?<br /><br />Penny Hemans<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/it-is-never-goodbye/
