I look in the mirror, <br />Today it's not kind - <br />The reflection I see <br />Wears the change in my mind; <br /> <br />Who is this person <br />Adorned with my face? <br />I don't recognize her......... <br />There's barely a trace <br /> <br />Of the image of kindness, <br />The bright sparkling eyes - <br />The face of compassion <br />Now tarnished by lies; <br /> <br />But who is the liar? <br />Not easy to say <br />That maybe my real self <br />Is ugly and gray; <br /> <br />One look in the mirror <br />Now boldly reveals <br />An intimate stranger <br />Who no longer feels <br /> <br />Compassion for others, <br />Who no longers cares - <br />It just doesn't matter <br />What image it wears; <br /> <br />How could this have happened? <br />How could I have failed? <br />I was the 'peacemaker' <br />With traits that were veiled; <br /> <br />No better than nothing, <br />My pedestal crashed - <br />My image in pieces <br />Lies broken and smashed; <br /> <br />This must be a lesson, <br />I've something to learn - <br />You've got my attention................... <br />Just don't let me burn <br /> <br />Beyond recognition, <br />Be gentle, I pray - <br />Restore me to favor <br />With each passing day <br /> <br />Until I am worthy.............. <br />This test I must pass, <br />To see MY relfection <br />Again in the glass.<br /><br />Linda Ori<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/rude-awakening-2/
