It was a perfectly <br />preserved kiss <br /> <br />some seven million years ago <br />or so it seemed <br /> <br />turned now <br />into stone. <br /> <br />hard to believe that this <br />emotional state of mind <br /> <br />used to be an ocean <br /> <br />standing in the stony desert <br />of what it has become. <br /> <br />But this kiss <br />was from another age <br /> <br />when all about here <br />was nothing but love <br /> <br />not this landscape <br />of loss. <br /> <br />Memory <br />that avid archaeologist <br /> <br />digging beneath <br />the strata of the mind <br /> <br />keeps turning up <br />these little finds <br /> <br />from the forgotten era <br />of our marriage <br /> <br />(strange that I can still <br />recreate you from a fossil <br />such as this) . <br /> <br />I file & date it: <br />“Lost Love.” Circa... <br />it seems only an instant ago. <br /> <br />I seal it <br />behind glass <br /> <br />place it <br />on a stand <br /> <br />in some echoy museum room <br />of my mind<br /><br />Dónall Dempsey<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/perfectly-preserved-kiss/
