And the air
solidified around us

encased us as if we were
specimens

wrapped up in the cotton wool
of this dense fog.

We stood still
& let the night examine us.

You could see
the darkness thinking:

“Well, what have we got here? ”

“Humans? Your typical lovers! ”

“You can see how they are
joined at the heart

share the same mind

& see
(no...don’t touch it!)

...the same soul! ”

The darkness speaking knowingly
like a surgeon to his students.

The fog
released us

& we continued on
leaving this examination behind us.

Your hair flailing
the night air

stars stuck in branches

frightened

us searching for
A tiny window
that glowed with human warmth

our candle
frail & fragile

like an old ghost

looking out the window
for us

the dog recognizing our feet
hysterically greeting us

we the lovers
elated

having found
our way
home.

Dónall Dempsey

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-lovers-make-their-way-home/
