The sun beats down,
Merciless and endless,
Stinging our backs,
Sweat pours down our faces,
As we lay in the grass.

Can’t remember how we got here,
But in the shade,
Of an ancient old gum tree,
By a river of years old,
Your shirt comes off…
Attempt to get cool.
Music lays far off,
Reminds us,
Of the moonlight dancing,
We did so long ago.

I lay next to you on my chest,
In the heat of the day,
Sweat runs down my back
I take off my clothes,
Attempt to get cool.
Sleeping in the shade,
In your arms,
Dusk in the bush,
Suddenly upon us,
Welcoming breeze comes,
The wildlife wakes.

From the cover of our ancient gum tree,
And beside our old carved river,
We see the sky turn pink, orange... blue...
We move closer together,
Attempt to get warm.
We hold each other, embrace,
In the light of the rising moon,
And darkening sky above,
We make love.
To distant music,
We would dance to,
In the moonlight,
A long time ago…

Melissa Coventry

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/attempt-to-get-cool/
