Sometime before my time, <br />There lived a man... <br />Full of adventure, <br />Who traveled the land. <br /> <br />The war he was fighting in <br />Was hell on earth, <br />But he felt he had to fight it <br />Because of his birth. <br /> <br />He, born South of the Mason/Dixon Line, <br />And it, pitting brother against brother, <br />Friends against friends, <br />Neighbors against one another. <br /> <br />But he met an Irish lass, <br />With hair as black as coal <br />And eyes of lightning blue <br />Who touched his soul. <br /> <br />And so he stayed with her, <br />But only for a while, <br />In fact, just long enough <br />To give her a child. <br /> <br />And then he was gone again. <br />Like a puff of smoke, <br />Down the road he traveled, <br />Leaving her with a heart that broke. <br /> <br />He was a Grandfather of mine, <br />A long, long time ago, <br />So I know the story is true, <br />Yes, I know it is so. <br /> <br />Scarlett Treat <br />January 9,2008<br /><br />Scarlett Treat<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/there-lived-a-man/
