I lie awake in the middle of the night
Rehearsing the speech that would have made things right.
All I wanted was a second chance,
The moment suspended and slipped from my hands.
For all that I had in an instant is now gone
How long will I suffer, I know I've done wrong?
I wish I could change the past somehow
But I will cry later and smile right now.
All along she suspected but for me she never expected
For I sympathized with her past of the lies and deceit from the men who did not last.
I never thought she'd find out but who was I to kid
With her intuition to prove the cheating that I did.
A slap to the face, first stinging, then burn
I knew I deserved, she knew that I earned.
She picked up her keys and left everything to me
Hurt and betrayed realizing it was never meant to be.
I cried, 'don't leave, ' as she struggled herself free
And I heard her say, 'Lord, why me? Oh, why me? '
Wallowing in my grief, my self-pity and pain,
I decided to stay home and there I remained.
Wide awake I lay bruised and burned
She never looked back and never returned.
She always said if I ever did something wrong
That I would realize, 'you never knew what you had until it was gone.'

Jason Summers

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/smile-now-cry-later/
