The water doesn't know

itself
as water

and when I turn away
peels off the name

I've given it.

It is
only

the
itself
of
its
self.

Human names
tire it

it has to spend
so much time

peeling off all the names
that defile it.

'Why don't humans
just let it be! '

'Why have all this need to name? '

Weary the water
puts up with us.

'Splashsplish! '
the child

blesses it
with sound

and even
the water smiles.

'Now that's more like it! '
it thinks.

Dónall Dempsey

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/what-the-water-thinks/
