Proud is a word that is so often used <br />And proud is a word that's too often abused <br />Proud of our Nation's war victories and proud of our Nation's flag <br />Pride as well as coming before a fall gives us the right to brag <br /> <br />When we sing of the brave soldiers who for our flag died <br />Their ultimate sacrifice is our Nation's pride <br />And our pride in a National sporting win in a huge parade <br />In our patriotism and nationalism our sort of pride made. <br /> <br />Of our pride in our difference from others we feel proud to name <br />For tis our pride in our difference that keep us as the same <br />Sort of people as our ancestors were and with pride we recall <br />That their idea of a fair go for some was not a fair go for all. <br /> <br />Proud to wave the National flag amongst the nationalistic crowd <br />And of our ties to our culture of which we feel proud <br />And yet by ignoring the plight of the homeless and those in poverty <br />We don't see everyone as equal that's how it does seem to me.<br /><br />Francis Duggan<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/proud-9/
