When I gingerly held my new born, <br />I could have at that moment sworn, <br />As I watched him with moist eyes, <br />I had no clue my life was going to turn topsy turvy <br /> <br />Sleepless nights, making the formula right, <br />I think those days I looked a sight. <br />But when he looked at me with trust <br />I would forget all my fatigue. <br /> <br />I couldn’t stop talking about him, <br />At times it irked my husband a bit. <br />He complained now I have no time <br />For him and my son was my only priority. <br /> <br /> <br />The years flew, he started school, <br />He looked up to me as his idol <br />But soon the place was replaced by his teachers, <br />Who he told me knew better. <br /> <br />But honestly I was not prepared <br />When he became a teenager. <br />To handle overnight a rebel, <br />Its just hormones, I would tell <br /> <br /> <br />Myself, and he would soon settle, <br />I think my life had become hell. <br />Where did I go wrong I wondered, <br />As to make his point, he thundered. <br /> <br />I would cry every night <br />After we had an ugly fight. <br />I would find myself brood <br />Is this called joys of motherhood? <br /> <br />Soon time came for him to go overseas <br />To pursue higher studies. <br />I got an email after a few weeks, <br />Mom, I am sorry for being such a creep. <br /> <br />Can you find it in your heart to forgive? <br />I just couldn’t believe. <br />Then one day he wrote <br />I miss your cooking and home. <br /> <br />My heart once again felt light <br />Can a mother hold anything against her child? <br />We were once again becoming close <br />Distance makes us value our loved ones, I suppose. <br /> <br />In the same home, one child grew bold and other meek, <br />Has it to do with genes, or we are all unique? <br />Still I wish parenthood, <br />Would come with a guidebook<br /><br />Mamta Agarwal<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/joys-of-motherhood/
