Beyond the scarlet mountains <br />as the sun begins to set, <br />my heart aches to return home, <br />but my destiny is to endlessly roam. <br />I left home to seek <br />my fortune and fame, <br />but fortune lead me <br />into the devils game. <br />I became a gambler, <br />a player with chance <br />with a crooked deck to hide <br />to have the odds in my favour <br />so I could never lose. <br />For every gambler <br />lady luck sometimes deserts <br />and my reward for her abandonment <br />is an eight by ten cell. <br />The chain gang is a bitter life; <br />the calluses on my hands are many. <br />The days that I am here <br />stretch all through the night. <br />So when I see the scarlet mountains <br />as the sun begins to set <br />my heart aches for a place <br />I will never see again. <br /> <br />26 August 2008<br /><br />David Harris<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/as-the-sun-begins-to-set/
