I had the worst day of my life.
It started with my nagging wife.
She wants to talk, I'm late for work,
and now there's coffee on my shirt.
I rush to get to work on time, but
hear a siren and get a fine.
This day's progressing right downhill
to venture on I have no will.
But I arrive at my desk to
see a note to my regret.
Computer's down can you work late,
the final report cannot wait.
At last this day has come to end
and now I really need a friend.
As I collapse in my chair
Two brown eyes start to stare.
A titled head and a whimper
then welcome licks as if I'm dinner
This day that's left me in a fog
was rescued by my friend my dog.

Helen Miles

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/friend-18/
