Are we there yet?
Hush, Child! We've only gone five miles!
Are we there yet?
Hush, Child! We've only gone ten miles!
Are we there yet?
Hush, Child! We've only gone thirty miles!
ARE WE THERE YET?
HUSH, CHILD! WE'VE ONLY GONE.....

And so the day began, with an early start,
And two cranky, sleepy children.
But, at long last, and at great relief to our parents,
The park opened its gates to our wondering eyes!
Not a Disneyland wonderland,
No amusement park to behold...

But we were so relieved to be out of that car
And we could now see all those things
We read about in our Mississippi history books
Just the day before in school.

Our eyes grew rounder and rounder
As we saw those cannons,
Our heads filled with the sound of battle,
Our minds filled with the pain of those who died
Here at Bloody Creek, Shiloh Churchyard,
The Orchard, now so peaceful and calm.

Our hearts beat faster with excitement
As we heard the cannons roar,
We imagined the pain of being hit,
And fell on the sweet grass as we died.

We became Confederate soldiers, good and true,
For that one day's journey to the battlefield.
It wasn't hard for our childlike minds
To recreate the sound and smoke of the battles
In Shiloh's now silent churchyard,
Or to see that creek run red with blood.
All the men and boys who died there
Became real for that one day.

Linda Treat
March 3,2009
Copyrighted

Scarlett Treat

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/are-we-there-yet-5/
