Finding a link with my dad, <br />Like no other son of his. <br />I sit in a chair, <br />Sweating, awaiting the pain. <br />My only way to connect. <br />I was far from what he wanted, <br />Never knowing I loved him unconditionally. <br />Through his gambling and drinking, <br />Missing the rent, <br />Hoping for that big win to help him out. <br />Not the finest example of parenthood. <br />I know deep down, he only wanted the best for us. <br />Not knowing any other way. <br />Not an excuse, I know! <br />Looking from a different viewpoint, <br />I realise I’ve learned a valuable lesson in life. <br />‘WHAT NOT TO DO‘. <br />Even with all his faults, <br />I know he’d do anything for me, <br />Step into a fight without thought. <br />He’d always look out for me, <br />Even when I don’t know it. <br />My dad a proud man. <br />Full of heart, <br />With tattoos all up his arms, <br />In defiance of his mum. <br />He gave his love through ink. <br />As the needle hits my skin, <br />Filling the many layers with ink, <br />I think I’ve made the connection. <br />Snake and Dagger, <br />Like my dad, <br />Love etched in ink.<br /><br />Joseph Tanner<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/tattoo-4/
