I will never see you laugh or simply smile,
while touching hands with our newborn child.
She will never hear you whisper in her ear,
or bring her gifts from year to year.
I will never be able to watch you swing,
while watching him do his silly things.
She will never have what’s been given before,
a chance for some and for some no more.
I will never have what once came along,
for I watch others sing a different song.
A song of their own and none will follow,
the path that weaves into minds so hollow.
She can never be held or loved so much,
no kisses goodnight, no sheets he will tuck.
We will never hear his laughter for us,
the laughter for her or the guidance and trust.
These are things we never got to see,
never got to hear, just never got to be.
I am not alone when I think of you,
just alone when I think of one and not two.
Two hands together on a Sunday walk,
down to the river or down to the park.
I will never see you teach her many new things,
or spoil her rotten under your fatherly wings.
This was not meant to be so we understand,
these are the cards that were dealt for my hand.
So please watch and smile if you see the fun,
send gentle breezes in late summers sun.
Calm her when night time storms arise,
help wipe away tears from her frightened eyes.
Help pick her up when she suddenly falls,
soothe her fears when night time calls.
Whisper softly her name she will keep,
when I am not there to rock her to sleep.
Hold her hand on that first step along,
sing with her all of her favorite songs.
Show her off to those you know,
show her off from head to toe.
We all know how you would adorn,
help keep her safe and keep her warm.
This I ask of you.

Gulliver Gimble

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/this-i-ask-of-you/
