Families come and families go continually <br />But some things are similar it seems <br />Get-to-gathers important to have <br />Talk about work and maybe some dreams <br /> <br />Big family dinners back in the day <br />Pot lucks I remember so well <br />Grandma in her wraparound apron <br />Her favorite food you could always tell <br /> <br />For grandma always went out of her way <br />To ‘reserve’ the part she liked best <br />And what was that piece of food you ask? <br />What was grandma’s quest? <br /> <br />“Leave that neck of the chicken for me, ” <br />She’d holler from across the room <br />Or sometimes she’d take a single fork <br />And stab it, and it couldn’t be too soon <br /> <br />We’d smile at the determination she had <br />For we’d never stand in the way <br />Of grandma and her neck of the chicken <br />And we knew it would stay that way <br /> <br />Even though Grandma left us years ago <br />Another generation has come and gone <br />When I see a neck of the chicken <br />It’s on the end of grandma’s fork prong!<br /><br />Marilyn Lott<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/neck-of-the-chicken/
