If you were like a garden
And the world was looking for your weeds
I’d want to see your flowers
And what you ought to see
If the world picked at you
Until they finally found your thorns
I’d want to see red roses
Standing healthy and untorn
If they all gathered round and tried to chop you down
I’d want to build you up and plant you gently on safer ground
And when they harshly clipped at you until you finally fell apart
I’d want to find the pieces and show you who you are

If you were like an ocean
And the world looked for your wrecks
Of the boats that you turned over
And sent down to the depths
I’d want to see the beauty
And peace of the golden sun set
Knowing the cruel storms over
Even if the damage took effect
I’d want to dive down deeper
Into the cold dark sea
And rid you of those shipwrecks and meaningless debris

If you were like the world
Bitter and full of pride
I’d want to bring you back
So you’d rest right by my side
Though I know that in the end
It rests upon your choice
If you blend in with the cynical crowd
Or stand out and have a voice

I can make the mountains tremble
I can hush the oceans roar
I can do anything I want to
But I won’t take you by force

Am I not the gardener
Am I not the wind
Am I not the saviour
Who died upon that cross for all your sins

If you will try to know me
I’d rest you on my wing
If you would just surrender
I’d be your flee from sin
But if you stand back away from me
Ashamed you know my name
I will be ashamed of you
And in the end, let you have your pain

Tatiana Elliott

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/if-you-were-like-a-garden/
