Rukhsar Ahmed - The day I turned 16

My sisters, they built me a coffin,
Sorrow and misery, I was buried within,
My sisters, their hands were stained with my blood,
The ones who cast me away from my imaginary kindred,
My companions, they took from me my age,
My life and my dreams, they locked in a cage,
My companions, they wear the label of hypocrisy,
For they dreamt not for themselves, neither for me.

I was left with no voice, and thus I could not talk,
All emotion was snatched, and thus I could not walk,
Grief was the gift they showered on me,
Solitary and somber was the sight I could see,
My life was a playground, a cloud, a game,
Isolation and desertion befriended my name,
Never did I mark nor scold their conceit,
Yet to me was their betrayal, to me their deceit.

The bond that formed, perhaps was never there,
The labels they possess now, perhaps they always wore,
This pain and anguish of mine never was decreased,
My friends, they did not comfort me, but had me decease,
These words of love and care and affection,
Their irony now causes my attention,
My friends, they were fake, because of envy,
Their desires of arrogance only killed me.

Rukhsar Ahmed

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-day-i-turned-16/
