Distant rays circle the creases in his face,
Repulisive hatred reflecting in the mirror... cracking,
A door creaking on the hinges,
As the ball and chain rolls across the dusty floor,

Leaving its track

Your ocean in the desert,
The rain falls from the orange clouds,
Dusty dry earth moans,
As its coarse surface crys in remorse,

The drought is under siege.

The farmer groans under the weight of his crop,
Slit marks of pain in his wrists,
His shoulders holding the weight of the world,
Anguish silent in between the lines.

He takes the last breath

The tears his rain,
Slidding through the sand....

The war was won... eyes closed as the sun falls.

Emily Lovell

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-drought-before-christmas-carols/
