George Sterling - The City and the Silence

2014-11-10 1 Dailymotion

Deeper than ocean's thunder unsubdued,
Titanic voices of the warfare strong
Of man on fellow-man about me throng
In my captivity. Yet how elude
The tumult of the torrents that exclude
The voices that to loneliness belong?
How may I find thy silences, O Song?
Thine angels whisper but in solitude.

I am set far from that. Fast as a flow'r
In some sad city-garden, for release
I search my grim horizon without cease,
Craving, if only for a little hour,
The stillness and the shadow of a bow'r
Where the blue mountains hold a realm of peace.

George Sterling

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-city-and-the-silence/
