This was written while I was a member of the <br />U.S. Air Forces, in 1944- a totally true tale. <br /> <br />My departure for the Air Force, <br />Bade me leave my girlfriend, Ann. <br />Our romance was on even keel, <br />But devoid a future plan. <br /> <br />Love letters came to camp each day, <br />Lending courage to go on. <br />Then, nothing for a while, until <br />There was one addressed, 'Dear John'. <br /> <br />''Dear John', Bill has returned to me, <br />From his duties, overseas. <br />We are resuming our affair, <br />So, forget about me, please'. <br /> <br />I showed my chaplain this sad note <br />And said to him 'I grieve'. <br />They checked my records, which were good, <br />And my C.O. gave me leave. <br /> <br />Back home I called at Annie's house, <br />Met her mother, at the door; <br />She said'they're getting married soon, <br />Don't come knocking any more'. <br /> <br />The stars of Heaven guided me, <br />Sending comfort, from above, <br />As I watched the dying embers <br />Of this unrequited love. <br /> <br />Then, I bought myself a Harley <br />And had Texas in my sight, <br />For my leave was nearly over- <br />Had to be there Sunday night.<br /><br />Joseph Anderson<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/dear-john-dear-joe/
