George Bernard Hough - My Genes

Deep inside my dna
wherein my characteristics lay.
A gene exists, it can be seen,
to make my eyes, brown, blue, or green.
The colour of my hair`s laid down
be it black or be it brown.
Pigmentation of my skin,
will I be fat, will I be thin?
A gene to say I will I be tall,
if slightly changed, will make me small!
Maybe too a gene to say
how my life will end one day.
Tendencies to illness too,
whether happy, whether blue!
Throughout the world mid human scenes,
permutations of these genes,
could be arranged for all to see,
another man who looks like me!

Maybe there my fathers sins!
are all laid down when life begins.
Within that blueprint set in stone
that corresponds to man alone.
Perhaps my spirit, as a gene
waits entry to the worldly scene!
And if this is indeed the case,
someone in our human race.
May walk this earth not knowing he
In spirit is another me.
If this is so I wonder whether,
we do in fact all live forever.

The foundation of my dna
laid down on that first bright day
would seem to show it is to Eve,
not Adam, as we would believe
the origin of our kind all rests.
else why would every man have breasts?

Copyright B Hough 2011

George Bernard Hough

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/my-genes-2/
