Screams in the dark.
Pain.
Not mine, but others’.
The air is heavy with it.
I strain, but my vision can’t pierce the dark.
More screams, more agonizing.
Screams.
Sounds of ripping, of tearing, of burning.
Louder now, closer.
Another scream.
This scream is different than others. But no louder, no stronger.
No higher. No longer.
Most screams taste of despair. Of lost hope, and blinding pain that is thrown into one last note of horror.
Not this scream.
This one is happy.

Bloodshed draws closer.
The pain... it pulses. Its everywhere.
The darkness is soaked throughout with the pain of those killed.
Its heavy, like a wet blanket. The pain weighs it down.
Still too black to see, but not too black to hear the screams start to slow.
Less frequently.
Its not filled with the sound of the dying anymore.
Its filled with the sounds of the dead.
A thick, cold bank of silence.
Their pain is unbearable.
It swarms around me, throbs, tries to push me down.
Quieter.
A few last cries.
The atmosphere is supersaturated with pain.
And it pushes down on me.
Silence.

But one last sound fills me before the silence is pure.
That same haunting sound.
The scream of joy.
Once again it sears through the blackness, cutting straight through to my soul.
Who could want this?
My eyes sweep the gloom.
I see nothing.
I hear nothing.
Absolute darkness.
Ebony.
Pure black.
A sudden flash of light illuminates the scene.
Then one more scream:

Mine.

Aurora Lights

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/screams-in-the-dark/
