Walking in the high desert,
My heart was ever at ease.
Whether in the noon day sun,
Or in the evening breeze.
My wonder never ceased.

The burning sands around me,
And God was everywhere.
In the washes and the mountains,
And in the sky so fair,
I tell you he is there.

The cholla and the creosote,
As far as you can see.
And yellow flowers in the spring,
The ravens flying free,
All wonderful to me.

The snow upon the mountains,
Jacks bounding o'er the sand.
Coyotes howling at the moon at night,
Behind the cactus stands.
Lord it was, oh, so grand.

Walking in the high desert,
I found myself again.
And found a beauty never known to me,
I never missed the rain.
Beautiful memories, my mind retains.

12/23/11 Alton Texas

Juan Olivarez

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/walking-in-the-high-desert/
