Each time Anzac Day returns
I listen to the history
Solemnly reflect
On the deeds and outcomes
And usually shed a quiet tear
Mourning the losses
The massive sacrifices
And the futility,
Chill at the Last Post
Choke with pride
And whisper under my breath
The Ode of Remembrance
Hopefully connecting
To the spirit of Anzac
To nation, to history
To personal feelings
Of a debt accepted
But its full magnitude unimaginable,
A generation discounted by conflict
A cost too high,
And yet I seek to live its essence
With resilience, honesty
And dogged determination.

Danny Draper

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/anzac-day-2005/
