There's a garden in the desert
Remote and tiny sphere,
Blue and green oasis
Hospitable fine and rare.
Verdant steeped in fruit
Ripe juices to revere,
Sweet temperate crystal water
Flows and ponds quite near.
To quench and soothe at bathing
Or on its shore to lie,
Sated in this paradise
Calm waters reflecting sky.
Warm hush flecked by callers
Wings flit through canopy,
Colours flash in upper crowns
Rainbows sprinkled liberally.
Acrobats on finest taper
Hang jostling precariously,
Sup on nectar dripped flowers
Teetering at each splendid bloom,
Or hover imbibing sweetness
Savouring berries bounty,
Spreading on the seeds
To perpetuate this little room.
Day slips through this splendid place
Shadows fall extend and thicken,
Anastomose in leaf and bough
Tranquillity seeps then quickens.
Star fall breeze waters shimmer
Lay the surface all ablaze,
In emerald, ochre embers quell
Burning cool and still,
Drain dimming slightest mauve
To dark and even chill,
Amphibian choir punctuates
The glory of spent light,
All uniform, faint and equal
A mirage conceived by night.
Settled in embracing arms
Beyond privations doom,
Secure in savoured calm
A foetus snug in womb.
Dreaming on far gleaming stars
This Eden set apart from gloom,
Blessed be ‘who enter here
By grace a chance to dwell
Love, sleep and safely wake,
In warmth ‘neath setting moon.
Tenuous island paradise
Blemish, save a perfect sterile sea,
Inimitable sacred garden,
Opal of antiquity.

Danny Draper

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/there-s-a-garden-in-the-desert/
