Explosions like these show no sign of letting up in the strategic Syrian town of Kobani.<br/> <br />It's become a focal point in the U.S.-led fight against Islamic State.<br/> <br />The U.S. Central Command says it has conducted some 23 airstrikes in Syria -- 13 of which were aimed at the extremist fighters near Kobani.<br/> <br />The city has been surrounded by the Sunni insurgents for more than 50 days -- with weeks of airstrikes failing to break their grip.<br/> <br />With no end in sight, Washington is hoping Kurdish peshmerga fighters will help stop Islamic State militants from establishing a caliphate in northern Iraq and Syria.
