Two window cleaners were left dangling 69 floors up on New York’s tallest sky scrapper after the cradle they were using developed a fault.

The men were trapped for two hours after a cable appears to have snapped. The open topped platform was left hanging almost vertically, until rescuers cut a hole in a window of the newly opened One World Trade Center.

With firefighters standing by presumably considering whether to lower another cradle to come to the men’s aid, the two cleaners were eventually pulled through the cut window to safety.

Tenants began moving into the new 104-floor tower only last week. A construction manager said of Wednesday’s incident things like this happened all the time in the city but not usually this high up.
