Vigil held for Peter Kassig, aid worker beheaded in Syria

A vigil has been held in Indianapolis, in the US state of Indiana, for the aid worker Peter Kassig who was beheaded in Syia.<br /><br />Kassig’s parents were among the mourners attending the vigil for their son, a medic and former US Army Ranger.<br /><br />Ed and Paula Kassig said they were proud of their son who was deeply committed to his humanitarian work. <br /><br />His murder at the hands of the group calling itself Islamic State (ISIL) had been confirmed by the White House.<br /><br />US President Barack Obama has condemned the killing as “pure evil.”<br /><br />The 26-year-old had founded an aid group to help Syrians caught in their country’s brutal civil war.<br /><br />Kassig changed his name to Abdul Rahman when he converted to Islam after being taken hostage.<br /><br />He was the fifth Westerner the extremist group claims to have beheaded.
