Romania: 2 foreign ministers quit over expat voting fiasco

Romania’s Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu has stepped dow, the second foreign minister to quit in the space of a week in response to voting issues in recent elections.<br /><br />Romanian expats were left for hours waiting in long lines to vote in last week’s presidential second round run-off.<br /><br />“We want to vote,” they chanted in Turin and Brussels and cities across the EU.<br /><br />By the time polling stations closed thousands had been unable to cast their ballots.<br /><br />Melescanu apologised for the kerfuffle before announcing his resignation.<br /><br />“I regret all these happenings during the second round of elections and I would like to publicly address my excuses for all Romanian citizens living abroad that had to wait in huge queues as to cast their ballots,” he said in a televised address.<br /><br />His predecessor Titus Corlatean quit after similar problems disrupted voting during the first round of the poll.
