A time-lapse view of Lake Erie during the lake-effect snow storm of November 18, 2014.
Buffalo, New York, is currently experiencing reasonably significant snowfall.

It’s nothing too crazy, just a whopping 5 ft of snow in the less fortunate parts of the city’s surrounding suburbs.

The area, in the north east of the United States, has suffered from a phenomenon known as the Lake Effect.

When cold air moves over the warmer waters of nearby Lake Erie, the water quickly evaporates, heating the bottom layer of air above the lake.

As the water vapor rises, it rapidly cools and condenses, forming heavy clouds and then snow.

Not the sort of snow that melts in five minutes before turning to a dirty slush, but the kind that falls in bursts as thick as a pillow.
