Anti-corruption officials have detained a chief Romanian prosecutor for questioning.<br /><br />Alina Bica heads a government department investigating mafia,organized crime and terrorism.<br /><br />She is accused of abusing a previous role on a ministry of justice committee by approving a government payment that was overvalued by 60 million euros.<br /><br />The case is part of an investigation that so far extends to two of Bica’s former colleagues as well as at least one businessman and an ethnic Hungarian MP.<br /><br />Romania’s new president<br />Klaus Iohannis said during his election campaign that he was determined to tackle corruption, which is rife in Europe’s second poorest nation.<br /><br />Data from prosecutors showed 1,007 people have been convicted for corruption and related offences in Romania so far this year, including 85 ministers, parliamentarians, mayors, judges and prosecutors.
