Officer Darren Wilson who shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, has handed in his letter of resignation, his attorney said on Saturday.<br/> <br />The resignation was "effective immediately."<br/> <br />Violent protests erupted in the city of Ferguson, Missouri where the 18-year-old Brown was shot and killed this summer. More riots broke out after a grand jury decided not to indict officer Wilson earlier this week.<br/> <br />Mr. Wilson said in a statement that while he would have liked to continue working as a police officer, his decision to step down was for the safety of the community and of the police force.
